In general, the poodle breed is a water type of dog and they have an affinity to water and are superb swimmers. During the first centuries of their existence, this breed was used to retrieve shot fowls and other game. Today, they are rarely used for such tasks but instead are used as show dogs and family pets.
The poodles are categorized in three sizes namely the standard, miniature and toy. Each possesses a thick and single- coated hair that is naturally curly and low-shedding and have textures ranging from coarse to wooly and soft. They often appear in many shades and patterns of color such as solid-colored, parti-colored and phantom which is a pattern of black and tan.
The breed is highly spirited and is prone to boredom that’s why they’re always caught up in a lot of mischief. Towards children, however, they are extremely loving and affectionate and does not back down at meeting new people and new animals. Moreover, the poodle should be allowed lots of playtime since they love to play but make sure to give them plenty of rest afterwards.
Additionally, the poodles make outstanding watchdogs and are swift to adapt in changes in the environment. Being intelligent creatures, the poodles are easy to handle when it comes to training. When it comes to potty training, you can count on the poodles to get the rules quickly.
It is believed that the poodle had been in existence for 400 years all over Western Europe. The exact place of its origin is debated to be France, Germany, Denmark or the ancient region of Piedmont. However, France is now the officially recognized place of origin of the breed.
It was the French who discovered and developed different uses for this water dog such as circus performing. The name poodle came from the German word “pudel” meaning the one who always gets wet”. The now endangered French water dog is said to be the ancestor of the poodle and in France, it is called “caniche” meaning duck dog.
