Understanding the Hunter in Jack Russell Terriers

If you notice one breed of dog that often appears on screen, that is probably a Jack Russell Terrier. This dog is often seen on tv and movies that even those who are not familiar with what they are can easily spot them. Although well known now, the fact still remains that Jack Russell Terriers are first and foremost a hunter’s breed.

This feisty animal was descended from small and lovable terriers of Europe and was primarily bred for hunting. Now, although famously known as household companion and pet, a Jack Russell Terrier is still recognized for its natural hunting abilities. If you wish to raise one, read the following information to better help you in taking care of your JRT.

First, you have to know that Jack Russell Terriers are innately feisty, happy, bold, and energetic dogs. It is imperative that you provide them with a huge amount of your attention, give them activities that will keep them busy, train and discipline them, and most of all, you have to have an understanding and acceptance that they are not your ordinary social dogs but are hunters. If you think you can keep up with these traits and is ready to have the needed disposition then maybe you can take one in.

A Jack Russell Terrier or JRT can be aggressive towards other dogs and other smaller animals such as cats and guinea pigs. Often, especially if unattended, the situation can result to the death of other dogs, animals, or the terrier itself. This aggressive instinct is innate to them but it can be avoided through proper training and discipline.

On your part, you must be responsible, consistent, and authoritative in imposing the rules. You must provide them with rules to follow and limitations to what they are allowed to do. If you fail to do these, it may result to negative behaviors such as senseless aggressiveness, snapping, and obsessive barking.

JRTs love to bark, dig, chase, and explore making them innately energetic. That’s why a sedate lifestyle doesn’t fit them or else it will only make them more aggressive. What they need, however, are activities to keep them busy, outdoors so they can explore, and training so they can be social and not fight or kill other animals.

Taking care and training of Jack Russell Terriers require patience and authority from you. If you think you would love to adopt one, better equip and prepare yourself for the responsibility. Always keep in mind that they are natural hunters so that when they try to be themselves, you wont be as surprised.

Inexperienced owners of JRTs will likely misinterpret them if proper research is not done. Jack Russell Terriers are excellent, intelligent, and loyal companions. Be sure to know the right ways of raising them and you will be a happy and fulfilled owner.

Yorkie Dog Training

Drop something on the path that shows up well, say, a handkerchief. Tell the dog to ‘seek back’, pointing to where you have come from.

Your yorkie dog won?t probably understand command language the first time used, so use body language and gestures to encourage him to go away and seek all the time. Nine times out of ten he sees the handkerchief and picks it up.

Usually if a dog reaches for its owner’s personal item during retrieval training he grabs the item, as he is very excited and eager to play. Praise him immediately; but should he pass it by – return to it, and show it to him, pick it up, and use it to play with him. Then take him away, get it put down for you again, and try once more.

The well behaved dog in public If your dog obeys during training they are going to have a wonderful time, really. I think that you will like best a dog that has been trained to stay happily in your car, for example, and would reward the yorkie for the relaxation you feel.

When training your yorkie to retrieve first decide to what you wish the dog to find. For example, use a glove. When training a dog to retrieve a personal item place the item, a glove for example, for a minute or two prior to doing the exercise, under your armpit, it will then pick up a good scent of you.

‘Sit’ in front and go round to heel to finish with most dog training. In teaching a yorkie dog to ‘seek back’, go for a walk and on your way.

Always bring treats with you during outings to reinforce good behavior. You do not need to feed your yorkie many treats every outing. Bring a baggie of 5 small bite size treats per dog.

Say no to your yorkie outside of training time. Reserve this word for outside of the training time. No during training will discourage your dog and make your efforts useless.

Exposed: Crate Training Dogs

One of the most common ways to train dogs is called crate training. “Crates” are usually made from plastic or steel wire and come in different sizes. Crate training is considered to be one of the best forms of dog training.

Dogs hate to pee where they sleep which is why crate training is so effective. During crate training dogs spend a lot of time inside the crate and hence learn to hold their pee. Slowly ut surely the dog begins to understand that the place to pee is outside.

When crate training puppies the crate is meant to replicate the puppies den. Except during feeding and supervision the puppy should be in the crate at all times. When the puppy is allowed out of the crate is should be taken outside or to the designated toilet area immediately.

The crate you buy should be big enough for your dog to easily move around in. A rough guide is to buy a crate that is 1.5 times the dog’s length and at least a couple of inches higher than the dogs head (in standing position). Crates that are too big allow for toilet room. If your crate is too big you should block off one end to make it smaller. Plastic crates that have wire doors are the most functional crates. They are lightweight and easy to clean.

When crate training your puppy; best results are achieved when toilet breaks are frequent and at consistent intervals. This will minimize the number of accidents. Little by little you can extend the time your puppy is inside the crate without a break as the puppy will slowly build up bladder control.

Another way to help ensure good results is to build up a image of the crate with your dog. You can do this by progressively feeding your dog closer and closer to the crate, by filling the crate with your dogs favourite items and by rewarding good behaviour inside the crate. Ideally the crate should be a place your dog wants to go and is happy to be.

One of the worst things you can do is use the crate as a place of punishment, or a prison. Avoid leaving your dog inside the crate for too long periods of time as your dog may begin to fear the crate.

Crate training is in most cases beneficial for both the dog and its owner. Some experts argue however that crate training can lead to psychological problems because the dog becomes so attached to the crate after passing so much time alone inside it.

If you are considering house training a dog, you will benefit from using an in-depth guide such as the one mentioned below. A professional crate training guide will save you a lot of time and energy and your dog will be trained much faster.

Dog Behavior Made Simple

You’ve doubtless heard the saying that people who have dogs as pets for a long time, actually develop facial expressions that mimic their dogs, which is why they start to resemble each other! While it makes an amusing story, there is some truth in this old saying. However, it’s the dog who’s doing the imitation, rather than the other way around.

For example, the grouchy old man’s dog may be a lay-around, a fussy and antisocial creature. Not that Rover would bite, he’s just got a disgruntled personality and kind of an Eeyore complex. There’s no fun and play in old Rover, much like his owner. A vivacious teen-aged girl, full of fun and life, has Rover’s offspring, Jingles, as her beloved pet. Both are seen bouncing around the neighborhood, playing Frisbee at the park or going for long walks through the hills, both scampering gleefully in the sun and wind.

Unlike cats, dogs are very loyal to their owners. In a way, understanding dog behavior is much like understanding kid’s behavior. Kids learn by example, and tend to pick up mannerisms and reactions similar to how they see their parents behave. Most dogs never outgrow the kid’s mentality. They don’t exercise good judgment, they’re not very sensible and they pretty much do what they can get away with doing!

Now, children have a good deal more intelligence than dogs do. Through experience and parental guidance, they gain better judgment, which is a primary goal of parenthood. Kids learn to communicate with words and the use of reason and logic. Our dog friends don’t have these advantages. Understanding dog behavior requires that you understand Rover and Jingle’s limitations. Let’s face it, your dog isn’t going to college and will never hold a job! What your dog will do is remain loyal to you, love you and misbehave whenever an enticing occasion arises.

Understanding dog behavior and misbehavior means that you understand that your beloved pet will remain a lifelong pre-adolescent. If Rover has an opportunity to run off with a roast beef, left tantalizingly on the kitchen counter, he’ll do it now, and ten years from now. He’ll never outgrow the urge to chase a Frisbee until his tongue is hanging down by his feet. Your kids and grandkids will be able to stick peanut butter on Rover’s nose forever, with the exact same result. Rover and Jingles love every minute of such silliness. They’ll be running over hill and dale, long after your kids have grown up and left the nest.

Understanding dog behavior involves a certain amount of slacking. Dogs are pirates and, so even though they know what you disapprove of, they will go for it. You’ve got to discipline your dog. A well inflected Baaad dog!, helps curb their natural inclinations. Once you understand dog behavior and the natural limitations, you just learn to live with the down side! Use a gentle and forgiving hand when training your dog. Your dog is going to love you forever, no matter what.

Think about your relationship with your dog. Does he or she reflect your personality? Does your dog friend behave like Tigger or Eeyore? It’s really all up to you. You’re the leader in understanding dog behavior. Put a smile on your face when he steals a cube of butter. A Baaad dog! is still in order.

Dog Who Are Trained Are Well Behaved

It is the best way to show kindness and love to your dog. I find dog training the most fascinating part of being a dog owner.

Many convincing reasons exist to train your dogs. For example, excessive chewing, barking, or difficult to housetrain dogs- these nuisances can be avoided by employing dog training techniques.

It wouldn’t surprise me at all if these once gentle creatures turn out to be vicious canines, almost wolf-like in their interaction with other human beings. These dogs are neglected in ways that they get wary of any possible human contact.

YOrkie dogs are among the most easy breeds to train. Yorkies are very smart and intelligent. They also want to please their owners, again increasing trainablility.

Yorkies not only are among the most easy breeds to train, but they are also excited to train. You will find when you train your yorkie that they are excited and enjoy the entire process.

Yorkies enjoy training games. Reward your yorkie at the end of each training session and possibly after successfully completing a trick to encourage those behaviors.

Dog Training

Sometimes there is so much going on around our dogs. Under these circumstances the dog may not know what, specifically, to be frightened of.

It is extremely hard for the owners not to give in immediately. Even just to stop the noise of the dog?s barking.

The other day my friend?s two show yorkies would not hold their tails up in the show ring. They were losing their prize cards. This means that they were also losing any opportunity of winning.

A dog owner may think they are treating their dog well by not being strict. However, this is rarely the case. Rather, dog owners who do not train their dogs are less careful and take less care of their dogs. Some may even call this neglect.

Dog owners who train their dogs less and then expect the dog to behave a certain way innately, never teaching the expected behavior, do their dogs a large disservice. And dogs who are punished for not behaving in an assumed manner, their owners I would consider cruel.

Barking Training Some dogs bark incessantly at everyone or anything. Other dogs welcome everyone as though he were a long-lost friend.

There are also dogs that chase cars and bite postmen. Some dogs even bite their owners! Hopefully this is very rare. One would think that such dog?s owners were mistreating the dog, but one never knows.

Your Yorkie may be encouraged easily. Many owners wonder if dogs are better trained with positive reinforcement or punishment. Positive reinforcement can be used to teach a Yorkie what behaviors to use and increase. I do not recommend using punishment with your Yorkie, although in some instances it may be necessary. I would reserve such instances to a minimum.

How To Correctly Care For A Bull Mastiff Dog

Caring for a Bull mastiff dog is not very complicated as long as you educate yourself on the breed itself and their specific needs. The breed is a cross between a Bull Dog and a Mastiff. Bull mastiffs are beautiful animals and grow to be quite large. The average grown Bull mastiff stands between 25 and 27 inches tall and weighs in at 110 to 130 pounds. When caring for them you should consider such things as love and attention, vaccinations, environment, training, grooming, and of course proper nutrition.

The Most important thing you can do for your new pet is to get it vaccinated. Keep shot records and make certain to keep all vaccinations up to date. Receiving vaccinations and attending regular checkups from the vet will help keep your Bull mastiff healthy.

Now you are probably wandering what to feed your new Bull mastiff puppy. The American Bull mastiff Association recommends feeding a puppy a quality food that is composed of meat as the first ingredient on the label and is 19 to 25 percent protein and 8 to 14 percent fat. They are more disposed to bloating than other breeds so feed them three small meals a day, rather than one large meal. As your puppy grows consult your veterinarian as to what type of food he or she feels best suites its individual needs.

Training is very important with any dog especially large breeds. Begin early teaching your Bull mastiff how to behave around purple. Teach him or her not to jump on anyone. This breed can have an aggressive nature if not socialized at an early age. Take them around people and get them use to noise such as children running and playing. Basically show them different environments and allow them to understand that these surroundings are normal and nothing to be fearful of.

Bullmastiffs require less grooming than long haired breeds. Bathe them only when they need it to avoid drying their skin. Brush their coat with a firm bristled brush ever so often to remove lose hair.

Exercise is imperative as Bull mastiffs can tend to be lazy. They may not be very active on their own, thus leading to weight gain. Take them for a walk at least once a day. They do love to the attention that play brings. Get a ball or a Frisbee and spends some time playing. you will both enjoy the quality time and benefit from the exercise.

These dogs are very loyal to their owners. They are wonderful with children and protective of their families. If you care for them properly and show them a lot of love and attention you will have a friend for years to come.

Puppy Obedience is Crucial

Puppy obedience should start early on in the whelping box. The basics of puppy obedience training may be initiated by the breeder from whom you purchased or secured your puppy.

Research has shown that until they are at least three weeks old, puppies are not ready to learn at all. When puppies are born they know only of their mom, that they are hungry and that they need frequent naps. At this point the puppy elimination is controlled by reflex. This will change around the 21st to 28th day. They will leave the blanket behind and search for a place to eliminate. Now, dogs begin to gain an awareness of the environment surrounding them, and to respond more directly to external stimuli. Now is the time to make great strides in a puppy’s mannerisms and behavior.

Getting Puppies Started with Encouragement

When you want your pet to do the right thing, the best thing to do is to not use punishment as a form of readiness. Verbal praise along with special treats are more effective. When you are needing to use negative stimuli for your puppy it should be limited to no and block any bad actions from your puppy with using your hands. Striking a puppy or injuring it in any way is cruel and should not be used as a form of punishment.

Puppies should be rewarded with praises and positive affection each time they respond correctly to a command. If not praised, puppies will lose enthusiasm and interest in obeying you. Alternatively, when given praise and caressed soon after a command is correctly executed, your pet will learn that following these things are fun and rewarding. Puppy obedience will also be developed as he learns that repeating proper actions will reap rewards. Positive reinforcement such as praises and treats strengthen the understanding and willingness of the pup to follow and respond to commands.

Persistence Mixed with Great Timing

The timing is more important than anything when you puppy training and that should be kept in mind. Details such as actions, movements, and corrections will affect the puppy’s ability to follow commands. Younger dogs may be confused by discipline, so it is critically important that puppies understand the link between their disobedience and the resulting disciplinary correction.

For instance, a puppy who chews on a toy in a different room may not respond to the command “come,” and unless it is reinforced, he will not learn to obey it. However, if the young dog is told to “come” under circumstances such as when on a leash, followed by a gentle pull towards the trainer, and subsequently followed by praising the dog, then he will find out that when hearing “come”, he should head towards the trainer, and that rewards will be waiting.

Puppy obedience training is best taught in easy exercises, one by one. It will be simpler concept for your puppy, instead of trying to teach all the exercise is a single session. Bring your patience with you when you are training and use positive reinforcement. Slowly your puppy will learn to obey.

Have buried Animals Cursed Bide A Wee in Wantagh NY?

Is Bide-A-Wee in Wantagh NY Cursed? (I can not say for certain this is all true. Many will argue Animals do not have Souls!)

I worked at BideAWee as a part of the grounds keeping staff for almost five years, from 1990 to 1994. I have many fond memories of my time there! It was my first real job.For years after I moved on I regularly returned to visit the Friends I had made while working there.

A few years ago I returned to find Tim Bourne the man who was my Boss and good friend the years I worked at BideAWee was no longer there! Tim Bourne was a Manager at Bide-A-Wee in Wantagh for over 20 years! When I heard Tim was no longer there. Myself and many others knew it was the end of Bide-A -Wee in Wantagh as Tim was the Bide A Wee of Wantagh!

Soon after Tim’s departure from Wantagh Bide-A-Wee the Animal Hospital closed! Now the BideAWee Adoption Center is closing its Doors. Some may say it is just a coincidence and Tim could not have done anything to stop the problems that happened!

I say Tim not being there is the reason these problems occurred! Tim had an incredible knack for bringing all three departments of Bide-A-Wee together. Whether it was for a Softball game at the School across the street after work or a Bide A Wee Staff night out, He made us all more then just co workers He made us all a family! He was the Heart and Soul of BideAWee in Wantagh. A body can not function with out its heart and without its Soul, why would it want to?

Ever since Bide-A-Wee of Wantagh let Tim go it has been as if the place has been cursed, I believe it is! There are Hundreds of Animals buried at the BideAWee of Wantagh and Tim took care of them for over 20 years.

Tim ran the Cemetery at BideAWee in Wantagh Honorably and many loved him. Losing a pet is very difficult for anyone, But some how Tim made it easier for people to get threw this tuff time! When the Scandal of pets not being buried at the Pet Cemetery in Middle Island NY happened in the early 90′s there was almost no one who was worried that something similar may have happened at Bide-A-Wee of Wantagh, Because everyone knew Tim would never allow something like that to happen there!

I believe the Souls of all the Animals at BideAWee of Wantagh can no longer rest and the place is now suffering from a curse! These Animals buried at Bide A Wee of Wantagh long for the man who made sure they were buried properly and helped ease the pain of their owners when they past!

Bide-A-Wee needs to do what ever it can to get Tim Back! They need to beg, plead and bargain! I believe once Bide-A-Wee of Wantagh has Tim back the Souls of the Animals buried there will once again be able to rest and the Curse will be lifted. Then Watch how quickly things turn around, I just Hope Bide-A-Wee does what it must before the curse spreads to the rest of the BideAWee Locations!

This Story is dedicated to the Memory of Red the Cat (Bide-A-Wee Mascot) By LJ James

Things To Consider When Picking Dog Breed

If you are a dog lover and are looking to purchase a new dog, then chances are that you have invested a lot of time and energy into trying to find the perfect dog breed for you and your family. In most cases the breed of the dog is a huge factor of the value of the dog. This is why when most people are looking for a dog they breed becomes an important part of the decision.

In the US there are more than 70 million dogs, but the AKC only has 143 breeds of dogs on their list. Even with these figures, making a decision on the right type of breed for a family pet can be extremely stressful and difficult.

The truth is that people have distinct attributes they are looking for in a dog. You can ask any owner of a pet store and they can tell you people are mostly interested in the appearance of the dog. Some people like small dogs, while others like big dogs, so a lot of things come into play when choosing the right type of dog for your family.

While many people are mainly concerned wit the size and looks of the dog, it is very important to also consider the temperament of the dog as well. But, there are many things that you need to consider before you make your final decision on picking a dog breed.

Here are some things everyone should think about first:

How big is your house? People often overlook this attribute when selecting a dog, but the size of the house needs to be a main factor that you need to consider when purchasing a specific type of dog breed for your family. A classic example of this would be if you are living in an apartment then there is no sense in looking a big breed dogs, because there is no way that it will be able to cope living is such small surroundings.

Do you have kids? If you have children then the job of picking the right type of dog becomes even more complicated because if you pick a delicate breed of dog, it will be in danger of the children causing injury to it, and small dogs tend to have a worse temperament with children. But, on the other hand a huge dog can be dangerous as well because of the amount of physical damage they can impose.

How much time do you have? You need to be sure that you have time to take care of the breed of dog you choose, because not all breeds are the same. Many types of breed require more grooming and are harder to maintain than others so be sure to take this into consideration before choosing you pet.
