SPCA International Announces U.S. Arrival of 7 Heroic Working Dogs from Iraq

Seven heroic dogs that worked several tireless years as contractors in Iraq for the U.S. Military and Coalition Forces returned to the U.S. for adoption in March 2011, aided by the help of SPCAI.

The dogs worked primarily in the ‘Green Zone’ sniffing out explosives in vehicles at checkpoints, military bases, the airport and in hotels where Americans stayed in Baghdad. Some of the dogs worked in land mine detection as well.

“We are extremely happy to be able to give these wartime heroes a new life in loving, caring homes after all their years of service in Iraq,” said Terri Crisp of the SPCA International. “These animals played an important and noble role protecting civilians and military personnel in Iraq and they deserve a comfortable retirement filled with love.”

The seven working dogs originally come from South Africa where they were trained before being relocated to Iraq and going to work for a security contractor based in Baghdad. The dogs were credited with finding a rocket at the Al Mansour Hotel in Baghdad which was housing several Americans and members of the media. That discovery may have saved hundreds of lives.

The dogs were retired from service at a typical age for service animals of their kind. Late in 2010, SPCA International learned that these American heroes were living in solitary dog runs with little hope of a happy future.

Since then, SPCA International supporters have rallied around the dogs – donating funds to help bring them to the United States and collecting over 7,000 signatures in support of their safe return.

The dogs range in age from 5 to 8 years old. All are in good health, except for one dog, Nugget, whose epilepsy forced his early retirement. All are very well trained and behaved. Currently, three of the seven dogs have adoptive homes awaiting their arrival, but SPCA International is still looking for the right homes for the remaining four.

People interested in giving these wartime heroes an honorable retirement in a loving home can email SPCA International at answers@spcai.org to enter the screening process. For more information, go to www.spcai.org.

Dog Collar Ideas For Would-Be Buyers

Dog collars are not just used to make your mutt a fashion plate – they would definitely need them when outside. A dog collar could help your dog come back home if you have the identification ticket around the neck. It’s also a way for your dog to show to the world that he is stylish.

While most dog owners would own the requisite generic dog collar, many others cannot simply do without at least half a dozen more! It is trendy to have different types of dog collars. Dogs also want to be on the cutting edge of fashion, and enjoy wearing different dogs collars. Today’s pet stores and department stores are chock full of dog collars – more designs, colors and styles than you can shake a stick at! It’s literally “collars of different colors” for the choosing, and a lot of dog owners like showing off THEIR personality and their dog’s by matching the color collar with the clothes they are wearing that day. But these owners are nothing compared to your average celebrities – the Paris Hiltons and Lindsay Lohans of the scene who find it cute and adorable if their equally fabulous dogs are decked out in the trendiest of collars! For ages dog collars have been used by dog owners to make the dog look more fashionable and fabulous.

Given below are a few tips that need to be kept in mind while buying a dog collar:

Of course, when buying dog collars, you will first want to ensure that you are buying a nice and comfortable dog collar – it should fit your dog’s neck. A dog’s collar that is too tight for the dog’s neck would only make it sore. Conversely, a loose collar would be the perfect chance for your dog to break free.

Always look for a dog collar that does not irritate your pet’s throat and neck area – it shouldn’t be that bulky. And do not forget to READ THE LABEL on the dogs collar – how heavy is it, what age dog can use it, and so on, and so forth.

If your dog happens to be the nastiest canine hombre on the block (as you claim he may be), then your best choice would be a heavier dog collar, thus allowing you to easily handle it with your leash when Mr. Macho Mutt starts charging towards that piece of meat.

Leather buckles on dog collars are a must, because you can be sure they will not break off.

Dog collars can be as inexpensive as $10 or as costly as $100 or more, but the price is irrelevant as long as you choose a dog collar that would provide your dog with the utmost comfort.

Useful Advice To Follow When Training A Dog!

Training your dog will make life easier for you, and your beloved pet as well. This article will give you many tips that you can use when learning how to train your family dog. Have fun when doing this with your dog, and in time you will see wonderful results.

Remember that your dog training is going on 24 hours a day. Do not make the mistake of thinking that you are only training your dog during your obedience classes and practice sessions. Your dog is watching and learning from you during every interaction you have with it, so be sure you are always reinforcing good behavior.

Stop your dog from jumping on you by not giving him positive attention when he does so. A lot of dogs jump because they are looking for that attention. If you reach out and pet them, even as you chastise their behavior, they will be getting the attention they want and continue the behavior. Instead, use a key word, such as “Oops,” and then leave. Be consistent with this and your dog will soon learn that he will need to keep all four paws on the ground to get your attention.

When you train your dog it is important to reinforce every example of behavior you want to encourage. Whenever your pet behaves according to your wishes it should be rewarded. This will prevent your dog from becoming confused and establish positive reinforcement associations. Behavior that is rewarded is behavior that will be repeated and eventually become habitual.

When crating your dog it is best to always remove their collar. Even the best designed dog crates offer the possibility of a collar becoming snagged. The result could be catastrophic. By removing your dog’s collar before you crate them you are acting to protect them from being strangled to death.

Listen to what your dog is trying to tell you. They are very smart animals and they know more than you think that they do. If he is acting in an uncomfortable manner when approaching other animals, do not try to make him interact with them. There is a good chance that problems will occur.

Consistency is key when training a dog. If you don’t want them to jump on the couch never let them up there in the first place. If, as they get older and more controllable, you decide to allow them up on occasion, make it clear that they are only allowed on the couch when they are called.

If you are serious about training your dog, remember to be a dog during training. Dogs establish control and behavior through physical commands and less through spoken command. When you want your dog to exhibit a certain behavior, use nudges or posture adjustments physically along with your verbal commands. These are traits your dog expects and will respond accordingly.

To introduce a new animal into a home that already has dogs, you should give that animal their own territory. This could mean initially giving the new cat or dog their own room or taking your old dogs out of the house before bringing the new dog in. Because dogs are very territorial, this tactic gives your new dog more leverage and makes your older dogs more reluctant to get aggressive.

You have read a lot of tips that will help you with dog training. If you know the right way to train your dog, than it will not be difficult to achieve success with your pet. Apply all the advice that has been given to you, and your relationship with your dog will be one you cherish forever.

Understanding Cataract Surgery

What is cataract surgery and why is it important? Cataract is a common eye-blinding, eye disease the world has known that affects the elderly population and infrequently, even children. Once medications do not work the most effective way of treating cataract is through cataract surgery. It is important to learn how to prevent and treat this impending eye-blinding disease. This makes it imperative to know what is cataract surgery.

Before delving into the question “What is cataract surgery?” it is vital to tackle what cataract is. Cataract is a vision impairing ailment that is manifested by having a cloudy vision. The lens functions in directing the light towards the retina where the light receptors called rods and cones are to see with clarity. Cataract formation is age-related but there are reported incidences among children which are mainly caused by hereditary defects on enzymes of genetic nature. Aside fom aging , trauma to the eyes like inflammation and eye surgeries may similarly cause cataract.

So what is cataract surgery capable of accomplishing? The aim of the surgery is to extract the cataract from the lens and there are several types of surgery applicable.

Phacoemulsification entails the insertion of a thin probe that produces ultrasonic vibrations and dissolving of the cataract through making a small incision on the lens near the cornea.

Extracapsular Cataract Surgery is intended for those who have more advanced cases of cataract formation. The whole lens is removed, so a larger incision is needed. An artificial lens is sutured in the place of the lens with the cataract after it is extracted. This type of operation takes a longer time to heal and to regain normal vision.

c.Intracapsular Cataract Surgery is only done with severe cataract formation. It requires an even larger incision because the entire capsule along with the lens is removed. After removal, an intraocular lens is placed and sutured.

Knowing what is cataract surgery is important but more important is knowing how to avert it. At times like this one just realizes how meaningful is the saying that goes, “An ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure”.

Puppy Problem Behaviors That Need Correcting

If you have ever had a puppy you know that there will be some problem behaviors that have to be corrected. These are always much easier to nip them in the bud while they are young rather than trying to break the bad habits as they grow older.

Jumping up on people is one of the problem behaviors that lots of people inadvertently encourage by mistake. But on the other hand, do you not enjoy seeing your comely canine critter jump all over you in excitement? It makes you feel good that your new puppy has this much affection for you.

This may be endearing if performed by a tiny puppy, but endangering if performed by the same puppy after maturing into a full-sized dog.

Correcting this behavior is easy – as soon as your puppy leaps your direction, place its feet on the ground ever so gently. Once your puppy remains still for a bit praise them extensively.

An alternative to jumping all over human beings would be for the puppy to extend his paw to show affection. This is still a positive form of getting attention, and safe to boot.

Another one of those problem behaviors that need to be tackled with younger dogs is the habit of puppies pulling on the leash. Try correcting that behavior with a dog that tips the scales at a hundred or more – best of luck to you, good buddy, it won’t be like it is with a ten-pound pup!

The first thing that needs to be taught in any training of a puppy is to heel or walk by you on a loose leash rather pulling and tugging. This is much easier to do by employing a head collar or training collar.

The process is simple – all you have to do is walk, and the moment you notice your puppy trying to charge like a bull, then turn, or pivot around, all the while slacking up on the leash or collar until your puppy realizes it has to change direction. It is also important that you make sure your puppy does not tug at the leash or pull at it, and even more important that you do not do the same to the leash.

You can then move on to further training once puppy is conversant with the heel command.

A Cursory Insight Into Mastiffs From France

Dogs have been of great help to humankind over hundreds of years. They have a unique tendency to comprehend and follow instructions. Man has taken advantage of this quality of dogs, thus bringing them under subjection to serve him in various ways. It is an age-old belief that the dog possesses a wilder nature that lies dormant under its submissive nature, and this has especially enabled them to serve as quiet watch dogs. An excellent example of such a typical watch dog is the French Mastiff Dog, that possesses tremendous strength.

Various opinions co-exist with regards to the origin of the French Mastiff dogs, which are also referred to as ‘Dongue de Bordeaux’. Many facts are hypothesized concerning their origin, as in the matter of the French poodles. One such hypothesis states that during the attack of Britain by the Roman soldiers, the Romans convinced by the effective work of the French Mastiff dogs, took them the Rome planning to subject these dogs to combat humans in the gladiator’s stage.

Based on another hypothesis, French Mastiff dogs were brought by Roman and Greek Molossus to Europe either from the dogs belonging to Aquitaine or from Spanish dogs belonging to Burgos. Regardless of their origin, French Mastiff dogs have proved to be efficient watch dogs not only in France, but also in many other countries. There are almost 3,000 French Mastiff dogs in America. However, the origin of the name ‘dogs of Bordeaux’ is unidentified, because these dogs do not have their origin in Bordeaux.

The French Mastiff dogs are not tall and possess a height of 23 to 30 inches. Their posture is composed and robust because of their perceptibly huge frame and muscular symmetry. Unlike the bat-eared Blue French bulldogs, the French Mastiffs do not have a flat face nor do they have projecting ears like the bats. Their ears really hang low from each side of their head.

The heads of the French Mastiff dogs are, to some degree, rounded to about 27 to 30 inches in circumference showing a massive appearance when observed from any perspective. The coat is short and soft to the touch and comes in a variety of shades which range from fawn (a brownish color) to apricot (yellowish orange) to brindle (tawny brown or grey marked with streaks) with a black or red mask.

Successive selective breeding has watered down the original ferocity of the French Mastiff dogs. These animals now show a character that is a sublime combination of brilliance and goodness and a mix of valor mixed with docility.

The French Mastiff dogs are remarkably good guard dogs exhibiting unstinting commitment to the members of the family to which they belong. Notwithstanding their ferocious faade they are remarkably gentle with children. Being a very strong breed French Mastiff dogs are not suitable for inexperienced owners.

Demanding plenty of physical exercise, the French Mastiff dog prefers outdoors. Nevertheless, they manage well even with only a little space inside buildings, but generally stay silent. If they happen to remain indoors, they need a comparatively long walk, than when exposed to play outdoors. They are not easily attacked by any disease, because of their strong and muscular physical structure. Snoring and dribbling are typical of French Mastiff dogs.

Other than the French Mastiff dog, some popular breeds of the mastiff are The English Mastiff, the Tibetan Mastiff and the Neopolitan Mastiff.

French bulldog puppies will surely be a welcome addition to any family. To read further info on French mastiff puppies click the link.

The Fascinating Art Of Dog Grooming

If you have a dog, then you are already familiar with the art of dog grooming. However, you will want to give this some serious thought if you are somebody who has yet to decide whether to buy a dog or not, or what breed. Some dogs are easier to care for than others, including ones with shorter hair. Conversely, a dog that has a long, shaggy coat would need to be brushed daily and since they shed a lot, you will have to become well-acquainted with the trusty old vacuum cleaner. Dogs with short hair would be more merciful to their owners, not to mention the vacuum cleaners of their owners, as they do not shed too often and do not require daily brushing.

A part of proper dog grooming is finding the right hair brush for your pet. Gentle strokes will allow your pet to get used to the idea of being brushed, which can make them anxious at first. Another important, albeit messy part of dog grooming would be giving your pet a regular bath. In most cases, expect your pet to initially avoid bath time like a Haight-Ashbury hippie circa 1967. It’s best to start as early as possible in teaching your dog how to act, which can be done by bathing your puppy early in his/her life.

Be gentle when brushing your pet for the first time around – allow him to get the feel of the brush and eliminate any initial reservations on the process. Giving your pet a bath on a regular basis is another essential dog grooming component that could get quite messy. Of course, at the start, pets would not be too excited about taking a bath. That is why this can be best avoided by focusing on your dog’s upbringing early on – in this case, giving him or her a regular bath early in his/her life. After they frolic around in your front lawn for a bit, give them a bath, and they will soon find themselves enjoying it. This may not be always easy to achieve independently, so don’t hesitate to solicit a friend or neighbor’s assistance. Have somebody else – a friend or relative, perhaps, to hold the puppy down while you clean him/her with a washcloth, or vice versa.

Hiring a professional dog grooming service is a good idea if you consider such task to still be too much work, even with somebody close by helping you. Aside from businesses geared towards canine care, these services are also offered by pet hospitals, or even by your trusted veterinarian. In exchange for a fee, your pet can have his/her nails clipped, be given a bath and get their fur brushed all in one afternoon. This is not an unwieldy process by any means, but to avoid any snafu along the way, it is a good idea to schedule an appointment first.

With the proper dog grooming techniques, everybody is happy – your dog feels happy and you feel happy as a result of seeing your dog’s morale at a high point. They may dig up bones and shed their hair and snoop around our front and back yards, but just because they do that doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate a regular bath. Dog grooming is also a reflection of how much you care for your pet, so let the world know how much you love them.
