If you have a dog, then you are already familiar with the art of dog grooming. However, you will want to give this some serious thought if you are somebody who has yet to decide whether to buy a dog or not, or what breed. Some dogs are easier to care for than others, including ones with shorter hair. Conversely, a dog that has a long, shaggy coat would need to be brushed daily and since they shed a lot, you will have to become well-acquainted with the trusty old vacuum cleaner. This may not be always easy to achieve independently, so don’t hesitate to solicit a friend or neighbor’s assistance. Aside from businesses geared towards canine care, these services are also offered by pet hospitals, or even by your trusted veterinarian. This is not an unwieldy process by any means, but to avoid any snafu along the way, it is a good idea to schedule an appointment first.

With the proper dog grooming techniques, everybody is happy – your dog feels happy and you feel happy as a result of seeing your dog’s morale at a high point. They may dig up bones and shed their hair and snoop around our front and back yards, but just because they do that doesn’t mean they don’t appreciate a regular bath. There is no room for error with dogs and babies so you must start to prepare your dog as early as possible. Like all training, it takes time and patience to see results, so prepare in advance.

Some jealousy is to be expected in the beginning because your dog is so used to being the center of attention, but follow some simple rules and everything will go great.

* Take your dog to your local Veterinarian for a complete checkup a few months before the baby arrives. Worms and parasites can be harmful to your baby so be sure to worm your dog before the baby arrives and at the normal intervals to keep on top of this problem. If your dog is not spayed or neutered, this is also the time to get it done.

* Try to get your dog used to babies by introducing to any of your friend’s or families babies. Always supervise these meets and this will go a long way to making your dog more comfortable around babies.

* Allow your dog to explore the baby’s sleeping, diaper changing areas, and related items such as baby powder, lotions, and diapers to become familiar with the new smells and objects. Apply baby lotion or powder to your hands, for example, and allow your dog to sniff the new smell. Dogs rely on their sense of smell, so familiarity with the new baby smells will help him or her recognize the baby as a part of the family. If possible, allow your dog to smell clothing that your baby has used before you bring the baby home.

* Get your dog used to baby related sounds as well, such as the infant swing, rocking chairs or rattles. Another good idea is to play recordings of baby noises, yes, they actually sell these, or make a recording of a friends baby. When you introduce your dog to these sounds, have him associate them with pleasurable things by giving them love and treats.

* Do not allow your dog to sleep on the baby’s furniture or play with the baby’s toys. Your dog should know that the furniture is not for him or her and should treat it as such. Provide toys for the dog that do not resemble baby toys. A dog may take the toy from the baby’s hand and unintentionally injure the infant.

* If you don’t want the dog in the baby’s room at all, install a barrier that will prevent them from getting in, but will also allow they to see and hear what’s going on. This will make him feel part of the process and feel more comfortable knowing and hearing the new baby sounds.

* Use a baby doll to help your pet get used to the real thing. Carry around a swaddled baby doll, take the doll in the stroller when you walk your dog, and use the doll to get your pet used to routine baby activities, such as bathing and diaper changing.

* Both you and your dog need to always know who is boss. Remember you are the alpha dog and never let your pup think otherwise. Always be vigilant around the baby and dog and always reprimand the dog when he shows any form of jealousy.

Proper grooming is a severely underrated aspect of dog care – it does not just make your little buddy look good, it also helps in his physical and psychological growth. Brushing is more than just about removing tangles and mats, but also a way to keep your pet smelling fresh as dead hair is removed. Skin inflammation can result, believe it or not, due to tangles that are not immediately removed. To help your dog properly grow a new coat, you can try grooming him during shedding – a great time to do this would be after exercising him. If your dog has difficulty walking, you may want to give his nails a trim – monthly would be fine. Dental hygiene is maintained by using dog toothpaste and toothbrush with soft bristles twice a week. A damp cotton cloth is used to remove mucus from your dog’s eyes. While a coarse rug is appropriate in cleaning your pet’s face.

When bathing your pet, make sure that you brush away dead hairs first to clear all the mats in his coat. Soak your pet in warm water. When applying pet shampoo, do not use too much of it. Focus on bathing his eyes, ears, chin, toes and behind. Be careful so that his ears and eyes do not get touched by soap water. In addition, you may want to apply coat conditioner once you’re through bathing him. When trying to figure out how many times you should bathe your dog, some breeds have different bath frequency requirements – your friendly neighborhood pet grooming shop should be able to assist in this area.

Adopting a Patterdale Terrier as a companion is no easy task so take note of the following helpful facts. First, be aware that this dog is extremely energetic and energetic dogs have special needs. The American Staffordshire Terrier or simply Amstaff, is an Americanized version of the Staffordshire Bull Terrier of the UK. The Amstaff is a combination of molosser and terrier breeds and its UK ancestors were bull and bear fighting champions during the 1800s England. In the US, its closest relative is another bull- and- bear- baiting breeds descendant, the American Pit Bull Terrier.

As animal welfare was practiced in the UK, bull baiting became illegal and therefore breeders have to transport these fighter dogs in order to save their legacy. In the US, it was the English and Irish who continued the fight games only this time it was dog pit fights. Unfortunately, the dog fighting did not flourish like in the UK, however, the breeding of these dogs still continued for the purpose of developing calmer and human friendlier companion breeds.

Together with the immigrants, the Amstaff worked in newly established communities, farms and ranches. They became farm helps, pigs and bear hunters, guard dogs and companion dogs. Presently though, the Amstaff is more of a companion dog and competitor of various dog sport competitions.

Lets find out all about the Shar Pei, that funny wrinkled dog with its blue-black tongue thats famous all over the world! Known also as the sharkskin dog, the Chinese Fighting Dog and the Chinese Shar Pei, this dog was developed in China. Because of its harsh, prickly coat, the name Shar Pei literally translates to sand paper skin.

The Shar Pei are no doubt an ancient breed, because we can trace their ancestors to as far back as 2,000 years ago! The bluish tongue is unique to only one other breed, the chow-chow, and they are thought to be related. Because of the way it looks and its close link to the chow-chow, the Shar Pei has ties with the giant Mastiff breeds!

This animal sports the easily recognizable hippopotamus head, are of medium size, squarish in profile, and keep a comical frown. For a long time, Shar Pei were used as general-purpose farm dogs in the Chinese countryside, with tasks like protecting cattle (stock), hunting, and guarding the home and the family. The Chinese, believing that the scowling expression warded off evil spirits, raised the dog breed to look the way it does now, along with being intelligent and strong.

To help it in fighting, the wrinkly, loose folds of skin and harsh coat were bred into the Shar Pei, rendering it difficult for the opponent to grab and hold on to. Their coats dont need to be cut, as they do not have an undercoat, but regular brushing is recommended. Shar Pei gradually lose their wrinkles with age, which is why puppies have more skin folds than adults.

They have three coat varieties: the horse-coat, the brush-coat, and the rare bear-coat. The horse-coat is prickly to the touch and is rough like sand, but the brush coat has longer hair and is softer to the touch. Their coats come in all solid colors and in sables too.

The Shar Pei is a very loyal dog, is faithful to his handler and bonds well with his family. They are smart, spunky, playful, dominant, and quite courageous. The Shar Pei are known for having a perpetually frowning expression, but they are calm, devoted, easygoing and independent little fellows.

The Shar Pei needs a firm, gentle, and consistent figure of authority to treat as alpha dog, as they are very clever and will end up dominating a weak trainer. They have a tendency to be stubborn, due to their instincts as fighters, but early training, socialization and exercise will easily remedy this. The Shar Pei have had myriad roles in history, including catching vermin, herding, and tracking, but if you know how to handle them, there is no reason they could not make perfectly desirable house companions for you.
