Most often than not, dog owners have to take care of some issues regarding dog behavior problems. You might find that your dog is stubborn and needs more attention to be toilet trained, or your adorable little puppy shreds your favorite pair of shoes or your kids most loved toy, or for that matter anything that takes his fancy. Most often it is possible for you to deal with these problems with a little effort and patience. But sometimes, some dog behavior problems become so severe that you have to get the assistance of a professional dog trainer. Once you realize that you need a professional, it is better to consult him as soon as possible.

When I adopted my pooch,I certainly expected a few dog behavior problems. I knew how adopted puppies could be. Most of them had been abandoned at least once, and some of them multiple times. Some of the dogs have been abused, and all of them have trust issues. Like people, this could cause them to act out.

In my case the problem with my adopted puppy was based on trust issues. Though the initial days with my pooch went smooth sailing, suddenly she developed some serious behavioral problems.

If I left for even five minutes, she would literally go crazy. She would run around, howling, running into things, peeing on the floor, and acting out in any way she could. It was a serious dog behavior problem because I lived with house mates. They don’t want to have to put up with my dog’s insane behavior.

I tried a few dog training tips, but they didn’t work out that well. For a while, I would leave for only five minutes at a time, But I was unable to get her to adjust to me being gone for longer. Finally, I called a professional dog trainer.

I repeated the same phrase every time I left to come right back in. I slowly increased the time I was out of the apartment till I reached an hour. Though it took me several weeks and tested my patience to no end, finally I was able to make my pooch trust me and now she is one of the best behaved dogs in my neighbourhood.

You might have found to be easy to train your dog with all sorts of commands that ask him to perform a certain action but when it comes to teaching your dog to stay, things can be a bit more complicated. After all, we are asking our dog not to move, not to do anything at all.

How to teach your dog to stay

Start by combining ‘stay’ with another command that your dog already has familiarity with, like the ‘sit’ action. Once your dog sits, don’t immediately rush to praise him, but tell him to ‘stay’ using the same tone you use for other commands. After holding that position for a few seconds reward your dog with praise and a treat. Before praising your dog use a release word, such as trainers use, which may be ‘Okay, good boy/girl!’, or ‘Good, well done!’

Try to encourage your dog to stay in position with your body language. When first starting out with this new command, make sure you stand close to your dog so he wont feel the urge to follow you and make it easy to stay in the same position without distractions.

If your dog should break the stay, then go through the process of sitting and staying again. A few seconds at the start of training will suffice and then gradually build up the amount of time your dog remains in the stay position. Always reward with praise, and eventually your dog will understand exactly what you expect of him.

Gradually move further away from your dog and ensure that each ‘stay’ lasts a few seconds longer than the last. After mastering the ‘sit and stay’ command, you will be able to then slowly introduce the ‘stay and down’ command, which will mean your dog will lay down when you require him to.
