Dog Behavior Problems – Why They Have To Be Dealt With Quickly

Most often than not, dog owners have to take care of some issues regarding dog behavior problems. You might find that your dog is stubborn and needs more attention to be toilet trained, or your adorable little puppy shreds your favorite pair of shoes or your kids most loved toy, or for that matter anything that takes his fancy. Most often it is possible for you to deal with these problems with a little effort and patience. But sometimes, some dog behavior problems become so severe that you have to get the assistance of a professional dog trainer. Once you realize that you need a professional, it is better to consult him as soon as possible.

When I adopted my pooch,I certainly expected a few dog behavior problems. I knew how adopted puppies could be. Most of them had been abandoned at least once, and some of them multiple times. Some of the dogs have been abused, and all of them have trust issues. Like people, this could cause them to act out.

In my case the problem with my adopted puppy was based on trust issues. Though the initial days with my pooch went smooth sailing, suddenly she developed some serious behavioral problems.

If I left for even five minutes, she would literally go crazy. She would run around, howling, running into things, peeing on the floor, and acting out in any way she could. It was a serious dog behavior problem because I lived with house mates. They don’t want to have to put up with my dog’s insane behavior.

I tried a few dog training tips, but they didn’t work out that well. For a while, I would leave for only five minutes at a time, But I was unable to get her to adjust to me being gone for longer. Finally, I called a professional dog trainer.

I repeated the same phrase every time I left to come right back in. I slowly increased the time I was out of the apartment till I reached an hour. Though it took me several weeks and tested my patience to no end, finally I was able to make my pooch trust me and now she is one of the best behaved dogs in my neighbourhood.

Stop that Dog Barking!

The dog which barks unnecessarily is a pain to live with and agony to live next door to. Some dogs bark because their guarding instinct is very strong and they feel it necessary to alert you to every little noise. Some dogs bark because they are nervous and the sound of their own barking gives them confidence . Some bark because they like the reaction it provokes in you and some bark because they have not been taught not to. It is quite normal for a dog to bark if he hears a strong noise during the night. Continuing to bark after an acceptable time is what you want to deter.

In most cases the way to stop a dog barking is to teach him to bark on command.! This may sound very strange but it does work. At the same time as teaching him to bark you are also teaching him when not to bark.

For the dog to learn this exercise you need to enlist the help of a friend, so that you can set up the situation. You should be sitting and relaxing and then your helper comes to the door and rings the doorbell.. your dog will naturally bark and when he does give him the command speak. Allow him to bark for five seconds and then give him the command quiet, giving him lots of fuss when he does what he is told. Do not attempt to open the door until the dog is quiet . then go to the door open it and speak to your friend on the doorstep as you would a casual caller and then close the door.. go back and sit down and after an interval of 10 mins repeat the whole exercise.. Alternate between speaking to your friend on the doorstep and inviting him in to simulate what would sometimes happen.

Try to repeat this process over a few days ,building up the association with the dog that he is allowed to bark for five seconds when the doorbell rings but he must stop when you say so and the door must not be opened until he is quiet. You are also getting him to associate the word Speak with barking.

Why must the door never be opened until he is silent?

If you allow him to bark as you open the door then he will associate that his barking is what gets the door open, resulting in future problems.

If he is the type of dog who imagines there is someone at the door and barks often unnecessarily the only way you will get him to be quiet is to go and open it. You may even end up in a situation of the dog training you- every time he wants attention he will bark to provoke you into getting up to answer the door to an imaginary caller.

Having taught him to bark on the command speak, you will then be able to get him to bark if you ever feel in a threatening situation-when you are out for a walk and are approached by a suspicious character,or should you hear a strange noise in the middle of the night. You can also apply the same training if your dog barks every time the telephone rings. Arrange for a friend to call you and don t answer until the dog is quiet. On these occasions do not practice giving him the speak command as you do not want him barking every time the phone rings. Simply correct him for barking unnecessarily at the telephone.

Learn Positive Reinforcement and Train Your Dog More Effectively

A well trained dog can be a wonderful part of your family. A well trained dog fits well in your family if he understands the basic house rules regarding where he should go to the bathroom where he can and cannot lay, and what he can and cannot chew or eat. Establishing these rules can make owning a dog an easy thing. But its not only important what you train your dog to do; in order to have a healthy, long lasting relationship with your pet its also important how you train your dog.

Shouting and yelling at your dog might get the instant result of your dog obeying you, but seeing that dogs are very intelligent and sensitive, this way of “training” them will only make them afraid of you. As a caregiver you are the person they should be able to trust in, in order to have a loving relationship with your companion.

Using positive reinforcement will not only establish a relationship of trust and bonding, it will also make all training more fun. If your dog picks up on the fun he will start doing his best to even please you more, making the training easier and faster.

Positive reinforcement means that you will take extra care to praise your dog for actions you require of him and not focusing on those slip up and mistakes he makes.

Dogs perceive the lack of attention as a punishment in itself so whenever something does go wrong, just dont react to it. During training there are a lot of things that could go wrong, so instead of yelling or punishing your dog, you just dont pay attention to that mistake.

But when you see your dog go to the bathroom where hes supposed to, then shower him with love and affection. He will soon learn that doing his business outside pleases you and he will go out of his way to make it outside whenever possible.

When training your dog using the positive reinforcement technique, make sure you set your dog up to succeed and not fail.

How to Teach Your Dog to “Stay” Easily

You might have found to be easy to train your dog with all sorts of commands that ask him to perform a certain action but when it comes to teaching your dog to stay, things can be a bit more complicated. After all, we are asking our dog not to move, not to do anything at all.

How to teach your dog to stay

Start by combining ’stay’ with another command that your dog already has familiarity with, like the ’sit’ action. Once your dog sits, don’t immediately rush to praise him, but tell him to ’stay’ using the same tone you use for other commands. After holding that position for a few seconds reward your dog with praise and a treat. Before praising your dog use a release word, such as trainers use, which may be ‘Okay, good boy/girl!’, or ‘Good, well done!’

Try to encourage your dog to stay in position with your body language. When first starting out with this new command, make sure you stand close to your dog so he wont feel the urge to follow you and make it easy to stay in the same position without distractions.

If your dog should break the stay, then go through the process of sitting and staying again. A few seconds at the start of training will suffice and then gradually build up the amount of time your dog remains in the stay position. Always reward with praise, and eventually your dog will understand exactly what you expect of him.

Gradually move further away from your dog and ensure that each ’stay’ lasts a few seconds longer than the last. After mastering the ’sit and stay’ command, you will be able to then slowly introduce the ’stay and down’ command, which will mean your dog will lay down when you require him to.

Dog Separation Anxiety – Most Common Problem In Dogs

A hard to deal with behavior problem but also most common is dog separation anxiety. Leaving you dog alone creates high level of anxiety because they are social animals, needing a lot of interaction either with other dogs, other animals or humans.

In order to solve dog separation anxiety you will need to first understand this anxiety disorder that brings on a state of extreme panic in your dog. The main cause of the distress is the separation or isolation from their owner.

Different levels of anxiety are possible. Some dogs can deal with being left alone while others might start worrying the minute you have left home, or even as soon as noticing you are preparing yourself to leave.

Before buying a dog you should take this problem in account if you are planning on leaving the house for longer periods during the day like if you are going to your work. Some breeds are more prone to anxiety and insecurity, like the German Shepherds, Airedales, Springer Spaniels and Weimaraners.

Shelter dogs also have the fame of being dog separation anxiety prone, not because of their genes but because of the possible traumatic experiences they have been through before ending up in the shelter. Once they are taking in by a loving owner and start building trust it will become very hard for them to left home alone.

When buying a puppy in a pet shop be aware to check the age the pup was separated from its mom. Dogs being separated from their mom too early on in life (before being 8 weeks old) and then put in cages like is the case in most pet shops, very easily develop feelings of anxiety and stress later on in life.

Lets look at what causes this behavior problem now that we know which dogs are more likely to suffer.

Neglect is the number one cause of your dog developing separation anxiety, if you are gone most of the day leaving your dog alone, you can almost be sure that your dog will end up with this problem. You as an owner should give plenty company, attention and love to your pet for it to be happy.

Being left alone, your dog will start looking for you and when unable to find you or unable to get to you, all sorts of anxiety symptoms will appear.

These symptoms can range from mild anxiety and becoming nervous whenever noticing you are about to leave, to a full blown dog separation anxiety problem where you will find your house trashed by the time you do get back.

Solving your dogs problem in the case of separation anxiety can be complicated and it will take time for your dog to understand nothing is going to happen and that he will be okay when being left alone. But with the proper training methods, big improvement can be achieved.

I am happy to let you know that there are very effective ways to deal with your dogs anxiety problems, even if you already have “tried it all”.

I know from my own personal experience just how stressful it is to have a dog with separation anxiety. I have had to endure many angry phone calls from my neighbors and at some occasions even had to deal with the police because my dogs would cause noise. And every time I would come back in the house I would prepare to be cleaning the floors or having to put furniture back in its place.
