Hair Loss and Your Dog

If you notice some hair loss with your dog, it could be that it has alopecia. This common disorder is found in dogs and requires immediate treatment. This hair loss can be caused by trauma, immune disorder or an inflamed hair follicle.

Left untreated, alopecia can cause damage to the dog’s lymphatic or immune system. Alopecia not only affects dogs but cats as well. Alopecia does not discriminate against age, breed or gender and can start gradually so make sure to keep an eye on your pet for signs of hair loss.

If your dog is chewing or you notice patches of hair either varied or symmetrical, it’s best to get the dog to the vet. The skin can get infected quickly which is not good for your dog. If you dog has alopecia, then it’s always recommended you check your cat because it can be transferred.

Mange is the most common cause of alopecia. Mange is caused by the mite Demodex. Regular washing of your dog and constant checking for this condition can help to ward off any outbreaks. And remember, after checking your dog or applying treatment, proper hand washing is important.

Alopecia can show itself in many ways and for many reasons. A number of missing patches can be the result of an inflamed hair follicle. Extensive hair loss can be a more serious issue and you might need to have the dog tested. Unfortunately there is not a lot that can be done to prevent this.

Treatments are usually some type of medicated topical shampoo or antibiotic treatment. Sometimes it is important to take a look at the hormone levels of the dog as well. After treatment is prescribed, it very important that you stay up on the medication and monitor the skin.

Reddening on the skin coupled with scaling and patchy hair loss could be a sign of ringworms. These are highly contagious so it’s recommended that you wear gloves. A fungus like ringworms and bacterial infections are usually characteristic of this type of hair loss.

Literature on these and other problems can be found in most pet stores in the pet dog supplies section. Why not be as informed as possible to help your dog or cat. If you notice symmetrical or patchy hair loss on your dog, seek help immediately to keep your pet healthy.

You are responsible for the health and welfare of your dog. Be diligent in their treatment if you notice any symptoms of alopecia. Don’t let him suffer through without proper medical attention.

What You Need To Know About Flying With Pets

Up until just recently, pets have only been welcome on airplanes if they’re flying with the luggage stored beneath the plane. One of the main concerns we have with this old practice is that most luggage compartments aren’t properly shielded to keep out the extreme hot and cold temperatures that occur during flight. This then goes from bad to worse if they’re forced to remain locked in their cage for hours on end when your flight gets delayed. While you’re up in the terminal trying to finish that book you brought they’re suffering in a dark compartment with practically no room to move around. If a traveling pet becomes ill during flight there is no way of monitoring, let alone being able to assist the animal until the flight has landed in their scheduled destination. As you can imagine this has resulted in countless tragic pet deaths over the years. Due to the growing concern for animals traveling with their owners in the air, most airline companies now enforce stricter training for their baggage handlers, even requiring them to report any adverse incidents to the Department of Transportation. In addition to that most will refuse passage to animals during extreme weather and during the hottest months of summer.

If your pet is a small animal than you’ve got it pretty easy as far as travel preparation is concerned. The large majority of airlines these days will allow you to bring your small dog or cat with you onto the plane as long as both the animal and pet carrier weigh no more than 40 pounds and can fit underneath the seat in front of you (please don’t even think of trying to put them in an overhead bin!). Due to allergies and passenger discomfort though there usually is a limit to the number of pets allowed on any given flight to if you’re planning on taking your pet with you just make sure to notify them of your travel buddy as soon as possible.

Every airline tends to have different policies towards people traveling with their pets which include both pets traveling in pet carriers as well as larger dogs who have to travel in kennels beneath the plane. To be on the safe side, always contact your airline ahead of time to learn what their policies and conditions are so that you won’t run the risk of endangering your pet. Airline personnel can also help you find the best flight time available to keep any changes in temperature to a minimal. For instance flights in the early morning or late evening are the best during the summer seasons.

Wether your pet is traveling with you in a pet carrier or below in a dog kennel there are a few precautions you should follow so that the experience is a pleasant one for both you and your four-legged friend. Make sure that you have your pet examined by a veterinarian no more than 10 days prior to your departure day. While they are there make sure your pet is all caught up with their shots, especially any rabies vaccinations as you’ll be required by law to show proof of vaccination when you first arrive at the airport (so make sure you still have all the necessary papers, if not then have your vet provide you with temporary copies to use for the trip). It’s also important to know that federal law prohibits airlines from allowing any animal thats younger than eight weeks old to travel on a commercial flight. Lastly, don’t show up late to pick up your pet once they’ve arrived. It’s not the airlines responsibility to take care of your pet once the plane has landed not to mention the animal is most likely in need of a bathroom break so be on time!

A sturdy pet carrier or kennel, available from most airline or pet shops, is another important precaution to ensure a safe flight. The carrier should have all hard sides-with the exception of soft-carriers for pets small enough to travel in the cabin, those are specifically designed for airline travel and will help keep your pet calm and content during the trip. These pet carriers or dog kennels should be ventilated on at least two opposite sides (to allow for a steady flow of air), with exterior rims or knobs to prevent blocked airflow, and its also very important that the carrier or kennel is large enough for the pet to stand up, turn around and lie down in. This more so applies to dogs traveling in the luggage compartment but it also will keep your small cabin-traveling dog comfortable as well. Both the kennels and dog carriers should have water resistant bottoms with plenty of soft material at the base, this will help contain any potential accidents due to your pet getting startled during flight. Your kennel should also be marked with a large, highly visible label reading “Live Animal,” at least one inch tall, including arrows indicating the carrier’s upright position. Finally, both the pet and the carrier should be well marked with the owner’s name, address, and phone number, and the pet’s updated health certificate and the feeding plan from the veterinarian should be posted on the carrier.

At the end of the day you need to remember that not all pets can handle the experience of traveling on a plane at high-altitude. Anything from sudden changes in cabin pressure to being in a confined space can result in your pet having a negative reaction to the whole experience. If your pet is the type that is sensitive to loud noises or other environmental changes then you might want to talk it over with your vet before committing to any travel plans.

Are your Dog’s Teeth Showing

If your dog’s teeth do not align right, its called malocclusion, which mean the fit of the bite is not right. This condition usually starts as the puppies teeth start coming in. As the dog grows to adulthood, the condition can get better or worsen.

By the time a puppy is about 6 months old he should have about 28 teeth. Those teeth are sharp and pointy so make sure your small children are careful while playing with a puppy. By the time the puppy reaches adulthood, he should have 42 teeth.

One of the side effects of this problem is that the dog might have problems picking up or chewing food. Best to have your vet check it out to assure you that your puppy does not run the risk of a fracture or wear on the teeth. Many times this condition has minimal effect with the dog eating.

While there are many breeds with this affliction naturally, the overbite and underbite are the most common malocclusion. Most dogs seem to be unaffected by this problem. The scissor bite is also most common, except in the flat nose breeds.

When you are looking for a pure breed dog there are certain characteristics that are common to their breed. The scissor bite is one of those malocclusions that is not common in the flat nosed dogs like Boxers, Shih Tsuz and Lhasa Apsos’. If the dog has a scissor bite, then you might not be getting a purebred.

It is not uncommon for puppies to be born with gaps in their teeth. These gaps will usually correct themselves as the puppy gets older and his adult teeth come in. If the problem does not correct by around the 10-month mark, it likely will not correct itself.

Your dog’s overbite may worsen as the permanent teeth come in because they are larger and can damage the soft parts of the mouth. Teeth extractions are sometimes necessary. Just check with your vet if you are concerned or notice that the dog is not eating.

Severe cases might require intervention as we have said. Typically these conditions do not ever affect the dogs ability to eat and will not require any medical procedure. As of late though, people are opting for doggy braces to correct their dog’s alignment issues. What is next, contact lens?

Many dog owners consider their dog a big part of their family. Be sure that they are vaccinated regularly to keep them protected from disease. They deserve to live a long and happy life with the rest of the family.

Healthy Teeth for your Dog

Who would think that your job as a dog owner would involve brushing your dog’s teeth? Well, dog’s can have bad breath just as people do. When you brush your dog’s teeth, then you can enjoy those little doggy kisses with fresh breath, not doggy breath.

As with people, dogs can suffer from the same dental issues as their owners. We can eliminate the same problems that we have by just giving them a good brushing weekly. Tackle that plaque and tarter buildup and give them shiny teeth with minty breath and brush away.

One thing you might be thinking is “how am I supposed to brush my dog’s teeth?” Well, since you can’t teach your dog to rinse and spit, you use a special doggie toothpaste. Also, you can purchase a finger toothbrush in the dog pet supplies section of your local pet store.

As we play with our dogs, we are throwing Frisbee’s, sticks and other objects for our pets to retrieve. These things can easily break your dog’s teeth. Regularly checking your dogs teeth can eliminate problems, and save on large vet bills.

Without a doggy dentist, most broken teeth will usually result in an infection for your dog. Infections can lead to other health problems for your adored furry friend so be sure he receives proper care right away if there is an injury. Keeping your family pet healthy will ensure a long happy life.

Infections in the mouth can lead to more severe bad breath. So regularly brushing your dog’s teeth and checking for injuries or broken teeth can eliminate any issues early. Doesn’t your dog deserve the best care you can give him?

Make sure when you are playing with your dog, you are using appropriate doggy toys. Teeth can get broken when you are using things that are not dog friendly for your dog to catch or retrieve. Always make sure that the item you are throwing for your dog to catch is size appropriate for your dog.

Hit the dog pet supplies section of your local pet store to find an age appropriate toy suitable for your dog. Getting your dog a toy that is not recommended for them can cause broken teeth, leading to bad breath so make sure their chew toys are what the vet has recommended. If you are not sure, ask the clerk at the store or your vet.

As your puppies grow and their adult teeth start coming in, they will become big chewers. Rawhide bones are great for this time in a puppies’ life. Changing out the toys as they start to get torn up is safe and will eliminate the risk of choking for your puppy.

Use Your Favorite Dog, the Pug, On Your Bank Checks!

Do you love your Pug? How about ordering Pug personal bank checks?

With its wrinkly, short muzzled face, curled tail, and soft snorting sounds, the Pug is a small dog whose name might be a form of the Old English word “pugg” which means “playful little devil.” What it lacks in size, it makes up for in personality.

When it comes to being someone’s pet, Pugs have a long history of getting along with their human counter-parts. During the Shang Dynasty, Pugs were bred to sit on the laps of the Chinese sovereigns. On occasion they are known as the “Lion Dogs” due to their resemblance of the Chinese guard lions. Even Tibetan monks kept them as pets.

Eventually, the Pug became the House of Orange’s official dog when in 1572 a Pug saved the Prince of Orange’s life barking at an assassin. In Italy Pugs were costumed in matching pantaloons and jackets and rode alongside of coachmen in carriages and Goya painted Pugs in Spain. They were sometimes used as guard dogs and even utilized as trackers by the military.

Her pet Pug carried hidden messages to her family when Josephine Bonaparte was confined in the Les Carmes prison. Now hanging in the Tate Gallery, painter William Hogarth included his pet Pug, Trump, in his self-portrait. Queen Victoria even kept Pugs as pets.

Pugs generally come in either black, silver, apricot or fawn and tend to have glossy coats that shed. Despite their serious exterior, they are very friendly and loving dogs which is one of the reasons they make great pets. In addition, they are extremely loyal to their owners and even require a great deal of attention. As for intelligence, they are ranked #57 in Stanley Coren’s “The Intelligence of Dogs.”

There are a couple of types of Pug checks available for purchase. One series, for instance, features a photograph of an apricot Pug in a field of purple flowers. You can buy coordinating accessories to match these checks.

You can also buy Gary Patterson Pug checks. This series shows an image of a Pug asking to be fed. These also come with coordinating accessories such as address labels, contact cards, and a checkbook cover. These must be bought separately, of course.

Through the Pug Savers website, you can order checks that will benefit the Pug Savers foundation. By clicking on a link on their page, you will be transported a site where you can find several different varieties of Pug checks. By ordering, some of the proceeds from your purchase will then go towards the organization.

A similar deal is offered by Pug Pros. Here, however, you can actually use your own photographic image of you and your Pug and have it printed right onto your checks.

The Pug checks by artist Linda Picken are another option. These checks pay tribute to the devotion and lovability that the dogs provide, through the eyes of the acclaimed wildlife artist.

If you choose to purchase Pug checks then keep in mind that you can save up to 50% off when you order online.

Support the Humane Society with Your Checks

The Humane Society helps save and protect thousands of animals – and not just domesticated household pets! If you’re a lover of animals and want to help support the Humane Society, you might want to consider purchasing personal bank checks that support the organization. These appealing check images of the pets you love and want to protect will give you all the support you need to communicate your compassion.

The Humane Society is one of the country’s most respected organizations. It is currently ranked as the 6th most popular charity and non-profit organization in the United States. It concentrates on conducting research, educating the public, and lobbying for improved laws when it comes to protecting animals.

There are also smaller organizations that help on the local level. These can provide shelter to abused and abandoned animals. Some local organizations also aid in educating the community on spaying and neutering pets. If you want to adopt an animal yourself, there is no better place to go than to your local Humane Society-sponsored animal shelter.

When you purchase Humane Society sponsored checks, you are not only making your otherwise blank checks more interesting to look at, but you’re also helping to bring awareness to this wonderful organization. These checks will showcase your love of animals and demonstrate your compassion when it comes to protecting them.

There are many types of check designs available when it comes to supporting the Humane Society. For instance, if you are a dog lover, you might be interested in the 4 rotating dog designs that contain images of 4 different breeds of dogs, each one more beautiful than the last. If you’re a cat lover, then you can also find Humane Society checks that contain images of your favorite furry felines.

The Michigan Humane Society, which cares for more than 100,000 animals per year, even has Humane Society personal checks that contain images of birds and raccoons, in addition to dogs and cats. There really is something for everyone.

When ordering your Humane Society checks, be sure to inquire about whether or not any of the profits go towards the organization itself. Many check companies give 10% of their profits to the Humane Society when the checks are purchased. This is great because not only will you have beautiful and interesting images on your checks, but you will also feel good about the fact that you’re donating your hard earned money to a meaningful cause.

You might also be interested in purchasing coordinating accessories for your Humane Society checks. Pleather checkbook covers are available, as well as matching address labels and contact cards. The checkbook cover designs vary, but one cover in particular shows a furry little puppy taking a nap on a blanket.

Don’t let the former high cost of unique personal checks keep you from ordering your Humane Society checks, either. Thanks to the Internet, personal checks can now be purchased for up to 50% off the cost that you would have formerly paid at your local bank. By using a secure website you can find hundreds of images available and all you need are your routing and checking account numbers.

Before you order Humane Society Checks, visit HumaneSocietyChecks.net to get coupon codes and to save up to 50% off your next order of Humane Society personal checks.

Finding the Perfect Pet Sitter for Your Family

Looking to take a vacation, but can’t take your pet with you? Many pet owners like to hire a pet sitter to take care of their animal until they return. This is great for the animal, because it gets to stay in familiar surroundings and doesn’t have to endure the pain of staying at a pet boarding facility or kennel. Choosing a good pet sitter is very important – you don’t want just anyone coming into your home.

It isn’t hard to understand why pet sitting has become so popular. A lot of people have the occasion to travel frequently, whether for business or pleasure, and it isn’t always possible to take a pet along for the ride. Having a sitter come into your home is a pleasant alternative to taking your pet to a boarding facility, where they can be exposed to disease and an unpleasant environment.

It isn’t difficult to find someone offering pet sitting services. The trick is figuring out who to start with among all the choices. check around among people you know and try to get the names of some good ones to start. Your veterinarian should also have some idea of who you can contact.

Once you have a few names, contact some of them and have them visit your home. See how they interact with your pet, and how your pet reacts to them. Animals have a great instinct and “sixth sense” about people.

When interviewing, ask them why they feel they are qualified. Many will respond by saying they like to work with animals, or something similar. This is a good start, but trustworthiness is something you can’t establish from this alone.

Find out more about their experience with animals. Are they able to recognize the initial symptoms of illness, and discern when an normally healthy pet is hurting? This might seem elementary, but it really takes someone with experience. Just loving animals is great, but a good sitter should have a broader background and some knowledge of animal health.

Ask these questions of any prospective sitter that you might hire:

What is their visiting schedule, how many times per day will they come over?

When they are at your home, what will they do? There is more than just providing food and water. What about taking time to walk your dog or play with your cat? If the pet leaves a bowel movement in an inappropriate place, will they clean it up?

A reliable pet sitter, when you find one, is a jewel. Knowing there is someone taking care of your pet that you can trust is priceless. Do your research and choose your pet sitter carefully – it does make a difference.

It’s just an animal, isn’t it? Wrong. It’s your pet, and a cherished member of your family and home. Enjoy learning more about taking care of pets to ensure their health and contentment.

Tips for Finding the Best Pet Boarding Facility

Whether your animal friend is a loyal dog, or perhaps a finicky cat that requires special care, it can be difficult locating a good place for them to stay when you head out for vacation. If you don’t have the luxury of acquaintances or relatives who can visit your pet at home every day, you will have to find a suitable pet boarding facility.

Deciding which boarding facility to go with is not a snap decision. You should not make this call based solely on what is closest to home. Perhaps you have some friends who know of a place that is good. In any event, we’ll go over some things you need to look for. Remember, your pet will be in an unfamiliar environment and attention to their needs will be crucial.

Don’t board your pet anywhere until you have personally visited and observed the conditions there. Some boarding facilities are filthy, poorly run, and represent a health hazard for your pet. Take some time to check out the cleanliness and general appearance of the operation.

When checking out a facility, ask if they require current vaccinations. They should. If they don’t, keep shopping until you find one that does.

Some veterinarians offer a pet boarding facility as part of their practice. One thing may come as a surprise to you, however. A veterinary hospital might be a less than ideal choice for boarding your pet, unless they have a dedicated staff and facility just for performing this service.

Consider this from your pet’s perspective. If you were a cat or dog, how would you feel hanging out in a human hospital for a few days? Hospitals are what they are. They are places for sick and recovering pets. Your pet is probably will not have much fun staying in a veterinary hospital while you are away, nor are they likely to get the care and exercise they need.

Veterinary clinics in general are not set up to do a good job of boarding pets. Their staff is dedicated primarily to attending sick animals, and they are often highly stressed and overworked. Your healthy pet boarding in such a facility is more likely to just be left sitting in a small cage for extended periods.

As you go about evaluating animal boarding facilities, take a look at the routine they follow when allowing the pets outdoors to exercise and run around. The pets should be supervised by a human at all times. Look at the quality and construction of the fencing to make sure it is secure and doesn’t have obvious holes or other damage that a pet could take advantage of and escape.

If you are thinking of boarding a cat at a place that also keeps dogs, make sure these two are kept apart. Each one stresses the other, and it is not a good environment for either. Make sure to find out how often any pet you leave will be fed, exercised, and attended to. There should be a routine or schedule of these activities.

Before you leave your animal at any pet boarding facility, observe how the people working there handle the pets. Do they seem to love the animals, and show compassion and patience? This isn’t the easiest job, and not everyone is suited for it. Take your gut feeling into account here – will they be good to your pet?

Deciding on a place to leave your pets is an important decision. Keep all these things in mind when you make your choice.

Helping your pets stay healthy and contented is part of being a kind and responsible pet owner. Stay on top of the latest healthy pet news and products.

Reasons a Healthy Pet Can Be in Pain Without Expressing It

Your pet seems happy and healthy. There are no obvious signs of injury or illness. There seems to be no reason to believe that your healthy pet is in jeopardy in any way. Wrong! Think again and carefully observe your pet.

Most animals, by nature, try to conceal any pain they have in order to protect themselves against attack by other animals. Any animal whose nature is to attack will go first for another animal that appears weak or injured. So, your pet may not be as healthy as he seems. You must make it a point to carefully watch your pet’s actions because this is vital to protecting their health.

There are a number of things you can observe in your pet’s behavior that will give you warning signs that its health isn’t quite right. Pain management has become an integral part of your pet’s overall personal health care, and they will often go to great lengths to conceal the fact that they are hurting.

Carefully observe your pet’s physical characteristics. Are they losing weight for no obvious reason? Are they chewing their food more slowly, or eating less than usual? This could indicate problems with their teeth or gums. Patches of hair missing, or an obvious dulling of their coat, could be signs of internal problems. You should know how a happy, healthy pet looks and acts. Watch carefully for deviations from this norm.

Routine dental checkups are important to treat dental disorders and related mouth pain. Most pet owners neglect their pet’s teeth, but doing so can cause your pet to experience unnecessary pain, especially as they get older.

Your pet’s good health will be, in part, a direct result of their diet and exercise habits. Animals who gain too much weight, just like people, are at increased risk for medical problems. You have to watch your pet to see what is happening. If they have become sluggish and reluctant to exercise or play, this could be because of arthritis or another joint disease. These conditions produce a lot of pain, and may cause your pet to become far less active and unhealthy.

Losing unnecessary pounds will help your overweight pet decrease pressure of sore joints and reduce pain. Many excellent reduced fat or low calorie pet foods are made to assist with this.

The lack of verbal expression does not mean that your pet is not experiencing pain. Minor behavioral changes can be cause for alarm. Being aware of normal healthy pet habits can help you and your veterinarian assess and treat your pet’s pain. Your veterinarian will be able to diagnose, treat, and manage pain. If you observe any change in your pet’s behavior, be safe and make an appointment with your veterinarian.

Find out how to take care of and enjoy your pets. Information and help for taking care of and keeping your pet happy. Let there be no doubt – a healthy pet is one of the superb joys of life!
