With the internet ever-growing and representing the, many and varied, interests and activities of humans, I felt it was high-time that we Jack Russells began to stake a claim. There is no question about it dogs are under-represented on the web, and the Jack Russell Terrier in particular; and so its my aim to ensure the balance is properly redressed. So thats why I have started the Parsons Nose ” my Blog for discerning animals.

Every dog I have spoken to about the blog has been really encouraging and I do believe that its time for the dogs of the world to get fair representation. Our views never seem to be taken into consideration. For example, if you are a dog reading this right now, how often do you get proper internet access time allocated to you? I bet its hardly ever ” right? And what about the most important question of dog-biscuits ” has anyone ever asked you what your favourites are? No ” I bet they have not.

In any case, who said that dogs ought to be eating flippin dog-biscuits anyway? We are naturally omniverous which means we eat anything, but that does not mean people should take advantage of our good nature. Let’s face it, we all prefer meat. Humans take notice – dogs like meat. See – that’s why we need a voice on the internet.

So you can see why the subject of dog rights is so very important. Dogs of the world need to take the initiative – and the time is right. If we stick together on this, perhaps we can get some laws changed so that dogs can always get what they need: proper walks, good quality treats and plenty of dog-meat.

Join me in my campaign for dog rights by visiting my blog and leaving me a message. Together, we dogs are changing the world.

Love, Darcey,

Lick, lick, lick!

by Tom K Knight

Dogs make great pets and superb companions. They have always been renowned as “man’s best friend”. But in order to be a excellent household pet and a pleasant doggy resident they need to be trained. They also need to be trained to be safe and sound and happy members of your family unit.

You ought to start training your puppy for obedience as soon as he arrives at your house. The training will be unending until he is about a year old and then while he may be considered “fully trained”, you will still need to work with him to keep his skills sharp for the remainder of his existence. A well-trained dog is a delight to own and a joy to be around.

The unconditional most imperative decree of dog training is that you must be the “alpha dog”. The term “alpha dog” may not appeal to you but the fact is that dogs are pack animals and they follow a leader. You must be the “top dog” or the leader. Every human member of your family must outrank your dog in the pack order. Dogs will do anything for affection and acknowledgment from the pack leader and in order to have a happy dog and a contented family the leader must be you.

You must not ever permit your dog to show domination. Teach him to wait for his food until you are ready to give it to him. Do not ever let him eat before you do. This is a understated thing that is crucial when establishing dominance.

Do not ever let your puppy to do things that you will not allow him to do as an grown-up dog. This includes jumping and nipping at you. One of the most critical things in training a dog is constancy. A dog cannot infer like a human and he will not comprehend that it is tolerable to jump on you in your play clothes but not in your business suit. He also won’t understand why he could do something as a puppy but he can’t carry on to do it as an adult dog. Be consistent.

Using a crate will make all of your training easier. Dogs feel safe and secure in a warm and comfy place that they consider their own. In the beginning your puppy may moan in the crate but if you just leave him in there he will grow to like it. Using a crate will make housetraining and obedience training easier.

It is imperative for your dog’s protection that he knows how to sit and stay. You must be able to control your dog at certain times and he must be in compliance with your guidelines in order to avoid problems like running off and jumping all over the visitors that come to your house.

Walking on a leash and heeling are also part of the basic training that your dog needs. After that you can move on to fun stuff like fetching. Well-trained dogs are the most pleasurable to own and to be around so do not slack on your pet-owner responsibilities.

by Karen Lynch

It is always pleasurable to get a new puppy but it will be easier if you have a few of the possessions that you need on hand before he comes home. You will want to start teaching him right away to be a good puppy resident and a esteemed member of your family unit. It is easier if you have the gear that you need on hand.

When you visit the pet store you will see that there is an profusion of things that you can buy for your new puppy. Some of these things are good to have and others are not really needed at all.

The most essential item that you need to have is a crate. All of your training will go better if you use a crate. Also dogs like to have their own space that is cozy and comfortable for them. Make sure that you get the right size, not too large and not too little. You may want two if you take your dog in the car very often.

Next you will need a good quality collar and a leash. Get one collar that fits properly and set aside any special training collars till later when you know better what you will need. A retractable six-foot leash that feels comfortable to you when you hold it is also imperative.

Any food changes should be made slowly so try to find out what type of food your puppy is used to eating. Get enough of that for at least a few weeks. If you want to change it later, do it little by little. A stainless steel food and water dish combo is also vital.

In order to be ready to start your training immediately you will need to have some soft treats to reward your puppy and also some kind of aversive. An aversive will discourage your dog from bad manners as it is something that is entirely harmless but your dog doesn’t like it and will do everything he can to keep away from it. A clicker that makes a noise or a squirt bottle that squirts water are examples of diverse types of an aversive.

Young puppies need to chew so you will want to get some appropriate chewing things. Start with just a few until you know what your puppy likes. The same thing goes for toys, get a few toys but wait until you know his personality to get very many.

The first few days after you bring your puppy home will be easier if you have the stuff that you need on hand. You will want to start training straight away so it will be easier if you are equipped.

The most key fact about puppies and dogs that owners must recognize is that dogs are pack animals and the human being must establish power. You, the owner, are the "pack leader" and you must behave the part.

by Robin J Hayes

The most essential fact about puppies and dogs that owners must realize is that dogs are pack animals and the human being must establish domination. You, the owner, are the “pack leader” and you must behave the part.

Puppies will expend a major quantity of time trying to figure out where they fit into the hierarchy. They usually do this by trying to set up their own domination. Some breeds are more forceful than others, for case, the terrier breeds. Some of the other breeds tend to be more dutiful naturally.

As soon as your puppy comes home he needs to have his place in the pecking order recognized. He needs to know that he must be passive to you and that you and the other human family members are the prevailing members of the pack. All of the humans inside the home must be greater than him in the pecking order. This is not a matter of reprimand but rather the way it must be in order for him to be contented and to become a responsible doggy citizen.

A few easy rules will help both of you establish this pecking order. If you don’t follow these rules your puppy will be receiving mixed signals and your training will be much more grueling as he will be confused and will not really know what you want and who the dominant party is.

The leader of the pack always eats first. Never let your puppy eat before you eat or at least don’t ever let him see you eat after he does. Make him wait until after you and your family eat if you were planning on eating about the same time or just eat at entirely different times. At first you may want to call your puppy to the food and make him wait for you to put it down. You can teach him to sit and then put the bowl down.

Everyday grooming of your puppy sends him clear signals about who is authoritarian. Your puppy may whimper or even act like you have hurt him at the beginning when you hold him for fundamental grooming. You must just ignore him and follow through with what you are doing. Always follow through with whatever you begin with a puppy because they rapidly learn when if you really mean something or not and if you are not following through your training will be difficult.

Most puppies will nip and bite at things when they are very young. You must prohibit this behavior instantaneously and let your puppy know that it is not acceptable with a clear-cut reaction of a “No” and a tap if needed. Remember that you are the pack leader and the pack leader does not ever get nipped.

The most imperative thing with a puppy is to show him that you are the authoritarian leader of the pack so be careful of games such as “tug’o'war’ where he could show some dominance. You must praise his good behavior with words and treats and disregard his poor behavior as you start on obedience training. If you follow these simple tips you will have a well-behaved doggie resident.
