Puppy Training: Lying Down 101

Dog training can be quite a long process and many people get frustrated because they do not know where to start. Ideally, you would start with some basics commands such as to lie down.

The “down” command is a very important command, and if you can rely on your puppy to obey it, you will find it to be a huge success and very good for both of you.

To start off, you need to put a collar around his neck and attach the leash to it. Then give your puppy the signal for the sitting position.

Make sure to hold the leash in your left hand not far from the dog. You need to stay close for this. Then give the verbal command “down,” combined with the hand gesture of showing him your palm.

Later he will be expected to respond to both the verbal command and the hand gesture. After giving the command, gently pull him down with the leash. Once he is in the down position, put a treat between his paws and praise him generously.

Of course, as with all dog training, you will need to repeat this step several times. Keep in mind to always give him the treat and to always celebrate a job well done with a lot of praise.

It might be necessary when starting to bend over a bit when you are giving the signal but afterwards as he or she gets much more familiar with the exercises you are able to stand up straight to provide the exercises.

However, the leash might come into play if your dog moves around instead of lying down. You can then put him back into the right position and simply try again.

The puppy will most likely go down by themselves after repeating the exercise for a while. You want to be excited and in an exceedingly ecstatic tone of voice and tell them how much of a good puppy they are as you give them the treat. This will encourage them to display this behavior again.
