Caring For Boston Terrier Puppies

For those who do not know this small inquisitive and sometimes humorous toy breed, they have no idea of what they may be missing out on, caring for Boston Terrier puppies is not only entertaining, but also, these puppies have a lot of love to give.

The AKC breed of Boston Terriers is a very inquisitive and intelligent little dog, belonging to the non sporting group, they weigh between 10 and 25lbs, and usually stand between 15 inches and 17 inches. While this is the breed standard you’ll also find them above and below the standard. They are often looking to entertain in a gentle way and often are referred to as “the American Gentleman”

These are not small boned or petite little dogs, but instead are considered sturdy little dogs with a very playful attitude. They work very well for families with upper elementary grade children and offer a willingness to be immersed in the whole family. They love to please and take harsh criticism personally, in fact, it’s best to scold rather than get heavy handed, as the tone of voice speaks to them very well.

Their coat and skin is easily managed as infrequent bathing and a quick brush will keep their partial coat glossy and shiny.

Boston Terrier puppies are just about like any other pup, curious, inquisitive and wanting to do the right thing, so training is a breeze if attention is paid to the small details.

The most important aspect of a Boston Terrier puppy is that they are still a baby, and just like other wee ones can become ill with too much excitement, a change in diet, or lifestyle. This means treating them like a baby and making sure they have down time and plenty of naps. You’ll also want to make sure they are eating small frequent meals and always have fresh water available.

Crate training is suggested for not just potty training but also to give your puppy a safe and comfortable place to nap or decompress from a busy afternoon playing.

It’s important to judge your pups activity accordingly and allow them or even force them to head for the crate for a bit of down time. Also, always have fresh water near their sleeping area and then you will not have to worry about dehydration in such a small body.

If you have not already acquainted your puppy with your local veterinarian, there is no time to waste. Your Vet will recommend a vaccination schedule and you’ll also want to find out what type of pet insurance you Vet accepts. It’s important that you follow through on your Vet’s vaccination schedule as your Boston’s immunity system will not be in full swing until your pup is over 4 months of age. This means that even if your pup received one vaccination, they may not be immune and can get sick.

While Boston Terrier puppies will do very well in a home with older individuals, they may not do as well, with families with very young children. They have a very inquisitive nature and seem to find trouble just about anywhere, this means that you need to provide a very safe place for your Boston when your not home, and keep an eye on them when you are.

The Boston Terrier is a great breed of small dog, and will suit in many situations, follow your Vet’s schedule, check on the available pet health insurance they take, and always make sure your Boston pup has a safe place to spend their time when you’re not around, such as a puppy pen or a crate.
